Why is there a waiting period for maternity coverage?

Health insurance companies have a compulsory waiting period of 2-4 years for maternity coverage mainly because maternity is a natural occurrence and not a sickness. Maternity benefits come into force after the waiting period. For working women, the employer usually has a maternity benefit in their corporate group health insurance policy where there is no waiting period and is effective from the date it commences.
