Most companies offering health insurance in India do not cover mental illnesses. In fact, they are listed under permanent exclusions. But the Niramaya Health Insurance Scheme by the Government of India offers cover to the tune of Rs. 1 lakh for people with mental disabilities. The premium is nominal and the cover includes OPD treatments and pre-existing ailments from the first day.
