What are the differences between individual health insurance and group cover?

Individual policies are purchased by an individual directly from the insurance company and the individual is the policyholder. In group cover, the group which is usually the employer is the policyholder and interacts with the insurance company on behalf of those covered in the group policy. Group covers offer special coverage at lower costs to the individuals covered under it. While individual policies belong to the individual, under the group policy, the insurance cover ends when the individual is no longer part of the group since the arrangement is between the insurer and employer. While the individual has the option to renew individual health insurance policy there is no such guarantee with group cover.
