What is a deductible?

Deductible is the percentage of sum insured borne by the insured as stated in the policy schedule. It is a cost sharing requirement in health insurance policies where the insurer is not liable for a certain value of the expenses applicable before benefits are payable by the insurance company.
A deductible does not reduce the sum insured. Sharing the risk entitles the insured to get a discount on premium.
